Sharps Disposal

To help the community safely dispose sharps medical supplies, the Sanitation Division has installed two sharps drop box sites. Sharps are defined as medical supplies with sharp points or edges that can puncture or cut skin. Examples include needles, syringes, lancets or “fingerstick” devices, auto injectors, infusion sets and connection needles.

By utilizing the drop box, residents ensure their sharps stay out of the regular garbage stream so they can be managed specifically at the Fargo Landfill.

The drop boxes are designed similar to medication disposal bins, allowing individuals to drop materials in but not retrieve materials out.

At-Home COVID-19 Tests

All at-home COVID-19 tests should be double bagged and disposed of in the garbage. No at-home COVID-19 tests should be placed in a sharps disposal drop box.

Locations:

  • Sanitation Building(117 8th St. W.)
    • Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m.
  • West Fargo Police Department (800 4th Ave. E.)
    • Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

*Note: All sharp drop box locations are monitored.

City of West Fargo works with the North Dakota Department of Health and the Fargo Landfill to ensure drop sites comply with public health standards for waste disposal.

Drop boxes are only intended for sharps and should not be used to dispose of medication or other medical supplies.

A medication disposal bin is located next to the sharps disposal bin in the lobby of the West Fargo Police Department for West Fargo residents to use.

All commercial sharps should utilize their supplier’s mail back program. The City of West Fargo only accepts residential sharps disposal.
